Multi-functional air bearing machines for NASA NuSTAR X-ray TelescopeABTech collaborated with Scientists from NASA, and Columbia University’s Nevis Astrophysics Lab when they needed an ultra-precision machine that would safely and quickly produce cylindrical optics modules for their long-delayed program. The scientists at NASA challenged ABTech to develop a multifunctional machine that would act as a diamond turning lathe, an indexing tool for raster grinding and an assembly station – all in one.
The extremely high accuracies of the air bearing slides and spindles were dedicated by the requirements of the assembled lens module. We exceeded the accuracy requirements and achieved 0.5 micron straightness (uncompensated) of the Z-axis over 700 mm of travel and position accuracies to 0.25 micron. Each machine features: Linear stacked air bearing stages; Air-bearing work holding and tailstock spindles for lathe operation or holding position of the optic during assembly and grinding; High-speed air bearing spindle for grinding graphite optic mounting surfaces; Indexing turret assembly; Granite surface plate and base frame; CNC lathe controller and electrical control cabinet.
ABTech, designed, manufactured and delivered two (2) air-bearing based diamond turning drum lathes in 6 months putting the program back on schedule. The machines performed flawlessly during the assembly and testing of the lens modules for the NuSTAR telescope.

When a company develops a unique product, it needs equally innovative measurement systems to monitor consistency and verify the quality. Faced with the need to meet tight specifications for its ultra-thin, high-performance thin films, Peak Nano Optics turned to ABTech in New Hampshire for ABTech’s expertise in custom-engineered metrology and precision motion systems.
Peak Nano has developed optical lenses composed of film layers 10,000 times thinner than a human hair. These nano-layered, gradient, refractive index (GRIN) lenses are significantly lighter than any other, enable more complex performance parameters and are custom-tailored for military, medical and commercial applications.
The company needed a system to precisely measure the refractive index of each film, ensure the films met customer specifications and then load them robotically into sorting bins.
ABTech designed, engineered, and built the system using ABTech’s own proprietary precision motion and measurement systems, off-the-shelf components _such as the robot_ that were used in new ways and Peak Nano’s application software. One of the project team’s challenges were to identify and bring together all the pieces, evaluate and test them for this custom purpose and learn the new technologies involved, at the same time ensuring that the completed system would be accurate and fast enough to meet Peak Nano’s needs. ABTech DMG360 On Machine Diameter Measurement GageNeed to check size of parts while on the lathe, grinder or other machine center? Diameter Measurement Gages accurately measure the diameter of large parts on-machine without needing to calibrate and sweep with a beam gage.
The precision ground hardened steel wheel provides both accuracy and durability while riding on an uninterrupted OD surface of your part. Using your machine center to rotate the part the gage calculates the diameter by averaging four full rotations. A proximity sensor and trigger with LED indicator for alignment combine to precisely count off each revolution of the part. A digital touchscreen is built into the portable control box for the operator’s interface and to display the measurement results.
Common machine tool receiver mount options are available to use the DMG360 wheel assembly in a variety of machines. It does not have to be dedicated to only one machine in your shop! Adjusters are built into the wheel body to allow you to easily align the wheel to the part, and a reference guide to apply the proper amount of pressure to preload the measurement wheel.
Optional handheld IR thermal sensors are available so you can enter the room temperature as well as the part temperature to use the system’s built in compensation factor.
