MicroForm Retrofit

MicroForm™ Retrofit Upgrade for Roundness Gages

 Unreliable Aging Gages Hurt Productivity

Is your productivity suffering because of inaccurate measurements from an unreliable old gage? Do you constantly hope that your aging gage doesn’t break down because you know replacement parts are no longer available? Our MicroForm retrofits can solve your problem and transform your passed-its-prime roundness gage to like new condition for much less than the cost of new gage.

The beauty of an air bearing-based gage is that there are no contacting parts to wear out. That means even a decades old air bearing should still be as accurate as when it was first made. Invariably, the problem with old gages stems from the accompanying electronics. Even if the electronics and operating system are still functioning, you’re likely suffering with slow speeds, poor graphics, and the specter of obsolete parts and non-existent support.

Our MicroForm Software Can Transform Your Retrofitted Gage

Our approach to retrofitting is to first evaluate your air bearing to determine if it can be refurbished. If it can be economically be restored, we’ll overhaul the bearing, update the motor drive and encoder with current technology, and recertify its accuracy. To that we’ll add our MicroForm control software and electronics, to allow your gage to once again measure tight tolerances with ultra-precision accuracy and repeatability. In fact, it may actually be faster and easier to use than your original gage.

MicroForm software is intuitive and easy-to-use and includes the most common form measurements: roundness, flatness, concentricity (in and out of plane), parallelism and perpendicularity, along with analysis packages for harmonics, slope and lobing. It also includes our novel “live RunOut” feature for quick in-process shop floor TIR/FIM checks.

Dedicated Processing Power for Enhanced Performance

The control electronics incorporate a “real-time” operating system with a dedicated FPGA processor with signal conditioners. These are the workhorses for running the measurement algorithms and eliminating resource conflicts that are typical with systems that run on a PC. The on-board processor offers high speed data acquisition and instantaneously synchronizes the indicator displacement with the high resolution encoder for pinpoint accuracy. Our processing platform provides tremendous system performance and is upgradeable with future system enhancements.

Installation, Training, and Support Included with Every Retrofit

On-site installation, setup and full system training are included with each gage. And we provide a full year of free software updates for a complete turnkey retrofit solution.

A Range of Available Options

Options to your retrofitted gage include a large 22” touch screen monitor, a Windows based PC loaded with our intuitive MicroForm software, precision inspection style gage stands, and our tilt and center (tip/tilt) worktable. The tilt and center allows very fine adjustments to align parts to the bearing’s axis of rotation, reducing eccentricity. The worktable’s spherical seat design maintains the part’s center point when leveling, saving the operator time in setting up the part for measurement.

Retrofit Versus Buying New

At ABTech we pride ourselves on taking a different approach. Unlike most vendors – who only want to sell you a new gage – we want to sell you only what you need. Whether your current gage is from another manufacturer or one of ours, we recognize that there is value in restoring an old gage.

However, for some older gages the cost savings of the retrofit may be minimal. We’ll only recommend a retrofit if we’re confident that each component can be reconditioned to provide the required performance, stability and reliability, and that doing so will provide substantial savings over the cost of a new gage. But if it makes better economic sense to purchase new, we’ll review our line of MicroForm roundness gages which are available in benchtop or large capacity configurations to see if they might be can better fit your needs.
